Thanks to all those who put in a huge effort over the Bank Holiday weekend (and since!) on the clubhouse, pitch and barrier at Slindon.
Honourable mentions must go to Trenty, Sammy Enticott, Alex, Freddie, James Belding, JP, Boxy, Curtis and Luffy for their hard work.
And what would we do without the efforts of Nigel and Terry: they want the place ready for County football and have put in hours of hard work in their own time to make Slindon ready.
Despite disappointment in the 4 cups, all is still to play for in the Premier division.
3 league wins in a row over Lancing (twice) and Upper Beeding have pushed us back up to 3rd, behind TD and Newtown. With both to play in the next week, not to mention a game against Wittering (!), 5 wins and a few goals could see us take the runners up spot.
5 games, 5 wins, we can do it if we really want it
Thanks for all your effort!
Holders through to Semi Final
21st Feb Vernon Wentworth Cup
Wick Reserves 0 v 1 Barnham
That was a bit more like it, a strong defensive display keeping a lively Wick forward line at bay until the 92nd minute when a speculative long shot hit the bar and bounced to safety. Up until then we had been the team more likely to score, Mike Grants 30th minute lob over the advancing keeper after a good through ball by Pedders being the only chance to find the back of the net.
Overall though a good team performance with no bookings (!). Chichester City Utd Reserves or St Francis Rangers Reserves await us in the Semi
Another valuable point gained
21st Feb Div 2
Barnham Reserves 3 v 3 Lavant
Another valuable point against a team placed 2nd in the league, and thats 4 points off Lavant in the last month.
Shauno with his 6th goal in 5 games and 2 for Brad means the team are now 4th from bottom and climbing ever closer to safety.
3 points from Worthing BCOB on saturday would be ideal!
Missed chances cost us dear
14th Feb Centenary Cup
Barnham 0 v 0 East Dean (E Dean won 4v2 on pens)
To use an old football commentators quote, "if it had gone in the net it would have been a goal". Well we all know it did, the opposition probably know it did, the crowd knew it was over by a yard, and yet despite flagging for a goal the linesman would appear to have been unable to say the right words to the referee. Allegedly.
Trouble is, if we'd taken our chances in normal time we wouldn't have had to worry about that incident, some miraculous saves and poor finishing kept East Dean interested until the end of extra time. No complaints about the penalties though, 4 well taken penalties finishing us off after JP had seen red for an understandable if somewhat prolonged verbal tirade at the referee.
Hat-trick for Shauno
31st Jan Div 2
Barnham Reserves 4 v 3 Predators
Another 3 points gained in a competitive game against Predators that could have gone either way. Despite having chances to kill the game off, Predators stayed touch in and but for the woodwork it could easily have ended in a different scoreline. A hat-trick from Shauno and a 3rd goal in 4 games for Dave Payne secured the points, tireless running from Liam earning him the man of the match.
Out after extra time
24th January 2009 Intermediate Cup 4th Round
Bosham 3 v 1 Barnham AET.
A game we could and probably should have won, but if we were going to go out of a cup this is probably the one we would have chosen.
Good value for being 1 v 0 up for quite a while (nice finish from Alex), we could have made it 2 or 3 quite easily if chances for Jakob, Pedders and Joss had found the back of the net.
However, the tall bosham no.9 was always a threat in the 2nd half, Redders made several fine saves to keep us in front but when Bosham were awarded a penalty he tucked it in off the post to send the game into extra time.
2 goals in quick succession sent us to our first cup defeat of the season, 1 dubious penalty and a poorly defended free kick giving us no way back.
Lavant 2 v 3 Barnham Reserves
A fantastic win for the reserves against a Lavant side challenging for promotion. Goals from Shauno, Ross and Dave Payne secured an important 3 points.
A point gained?
17th January 2009 WSFL Premier
East Dean 2 v 2 Barnham
Considering our league form against East Dean over recent seasons, and the fact that we were behind until the 88th minute, it would appear to be a point hard earned. However, with TD and Newtown also dropping points it's a shame we couldn't have converted some of the good chances we created, especially during the first half.
0 v 0 at half time didn't do us justice as we should have been 2 or 3 up by then, but it took East Dean to score in the 53rd minute before we clicked into gear. The long awaited return of Benny C. on as sub in the 54th minute, got us going as a mazy run was ended in the penalty area by yet another rash East Dean challenge, Pedders duly converted. Despite being the better side we let in another sloppy goal in the 68th minute, a soft cross finding its way in at the far post. To our credit we kept going and finally equalised in the 87th minute. Another rash challenge led to a free kick out wide, Joss swung it in head height towards the goal and BJ got his head on the end of it to score his first goal for Barnham. We still could have won it late on, but Pedders shot went agonisingly wide of the post.

WE WOZ ROBBED
Barnham got off to the worst possible start to the season with a home defeat to Champions Newtown Villa.
In the pouring rain Barnham went behind after 7 minutes when a long ball from Mark Cooper caught the back four square and dropped to Dan Newton (of all people) who calmly rounded Duffield in the Barnham goal. Despite dominating for long periods of the first half a combination of poor decisions from players and the linesman meant they couldn't find the breakthrough. Until Stuart Hazelgrove picked out Graham Whyte with a free-kick who headed Barnham level just before the break.
The second half was much the same with Barnham looking like the only team that was going to win it. Then with 5 minutes to go Marcus Cogger and Jonus Tempelman both slipped in the boggy penalty area, the inexperienced referee deemed this to be a penalty, much to the amazement of both sets of supporters and management (except Jez ;-). The spot kick was converted and Barnham can count themselves very unlucky, although they didn't play particularly well, they did not deserve to lose this one.

More Cup Fixtures Announced..............
The draws for the Sussex Intermediate and the Vernon Wentworth cup have been made.
We start the defence of the Vernon Wentworth Cup away at Portslade Athletic while in the Intermediate Cup, we travel to the winners of Horsham YMCA or Wick (both County Reserve sides).
There is no date as yet for the Vernon Wentworth but the Intermediate Cup is due to be played on the 11th October.
SEASON STARTS HERE
Barnham were off and running Saturday after chalking up their first win at the second time of asking.
The team welcomed back Joss, Richie and Smudge to the starting line up and Jakob took his place on the bench after getting married last week (Cogratulations).
Barnham started brightly and already seemed more 'up for it' than last weeks efforts. Mike Grant was finding himself in lots of space on the left and it was his cross that deflected in off a Petworth player inside the box, that put Barnham infront, although typically Smudger tried to claim it. The Petworth back four couldn't live with pace of Benny C which resulted in him being brought down in the box, he got up and brushed himself down and slammed in number 2 for Barnham from the spot.
It could and probably should have been more, but the second half was a non-event although Barnham had and wasted a lot more chances and posession, Petworth also had some good chances and if it wasn't for some woeful finishing of their own they could've sneaked something from this game.
BARNHAM 2 Petworth 0
TEAM: Duffield, Bally, Cogger(c) (Westy 60mins), BJ, Boxy, Woody (Jakob 75 mins), Joss, Davey Mac (Leroy 70 mins), Mike, Smudge, Benny.
BARNHAM CRUISE TO NEXT ROUND
Barnham played some very good football in parts and eased through to the next round of the Malcom Symmonds cup, where Newtown await.
With the visitors playing 3-5-2 Smudger was asked to work back and help the midfield allowing Barnham to isolate the Stedham wing-backs 2 v 1 which meant Bally and Woody on the right and Boxy and Mikey on the left had lots of space to influence the game. Smudgers hard work and the use of the wings made for a comfortable game for Barnham. They went infront through a spectacular free-kick from Richie Boxall, who unfortunately had to be replaced shortly after. Whilst Boxall was recieving treatment Benny was put through by Joss Parsons, his pace took him away from the defenders and his shot went in off the keeper to put Barnham 2 up. Boxy's replacement Karl Westbrook, who was unfortunate to find himself on the bench again, carried on where he left off, working well with Mike Grant down the left. Westy picked out Whytey with a beautifully taken free-kick which Whytey headed past the Stedham keeper scoring his second goal in as many games.
3-0 up at half-time the manager asked for a disiplined performance in the second and a clean sheet. He got both and Mike Grant added a 4th.

Reserves continue to struggle
The loss of players from the club has hit the reserve team hardest of all, but they are starting to rebuild and it will surely be only a matter of time until the results start to come.
Keep up the effort lads, the already talented squad will hopefully be bolstered by the arrival of new players over the coming weeks, so keep up the hard work!
Barnham back on track
After the upheaval of recent weeks, Barnham 1st team are well and truly back on track.
A comprehensive 4 v 0 league victory over a team we always struggle against, East Dean, was followed by a hard fought 3 v 2 victory over previously unbeaten Newtown Villa in the Malcolm Simmons Cup.
Last week, Barnham travelled to Horsham YMCA in the Intermediate Cup. 2 well taken Barnham goals in the first 6 minutes set the tone, the final scoreline of 6 v 0 was a fair refelction of the game.
We cant blame the pitch for the all of it............
15th November, Premier Division: Cowfold 3 v 0 Barnham
Not our best performance of the season, to say the least. Pitch was awful, we were not at the races and Cowfold played to their strengths. Still, lets put it behind us, there's lots of the season to play for yet and with Newtown beating TD Shipley we can still have a major say in the title race.
Reserves show their potential
3rd Time lucky!
After being beaten twice in recent weeks by Yapton, the reserves put in a superb performance to gain their first victory of the season.
Well done to Peter Lawrence and Daryl Long for taking over the reins, a hat-trick from Liam, 2 goals for Shane and 1 each for Sam and Ross should give them plenty of encouragement for the rest of the season.
Unbeaten record goes.....
22nd November Vernon Wentworth Trophy
Worthing Athletic 2 v 3 Barnham.
Against the previously unbeaten Worthing League Leaders, Barnham fought their way to a well deserved victory.
It was almost impossible to play football on one of the smallest bumpiest pitches ever seen, so to be fair Worthing didn't try to. Their route 1 longball kept the defence busy in the first half, one lax moment allowing Worthing to open the scoring from a corner. Almost immediately, Alex headed home a corner at the other end for a deserved equaliser. Nigel bought the Vernon Wentworth Trophy into the changing rooms at half time to remind the team what they were playing for , and the second half started with Barnham playing good football and creating several chances early on. Worthing were not easy to break down however and took the lead again 10 minutes after the break, with Redders in goal having no chance to save it.
Much to their credit, the lads kept battling and gained another equaliser when Matt Noble curled a free kick over the wall and into the back of the net from 25 yards. The match could still have swung either way, but a superb individual goal from Jakob with 5 minutes remaining was enough to see us progress into the next round.
Holders march on!
29th November Vernon Wentworth Trophy
Shoreham Reserves 2 v 3 Barnham
A superb hat-trick from Jakub and a massive performance from Redders in goal saw us through to the last 8 of our cup.
Against a strong County Reserve side the defence had to withstand early pressure from a quick and experienced Shoreham forward line. After that it was a fairly even first half , Redders making at least 2 fine saves and Joss going close at the other end with 2 curling efforts. Jakub broke the deadlock just before half time with a well taken goal (1-0), then extended the lead 5 minutes into the second half with a volley from the 6 yard line after good work by Alex down the line (2-0).
The Shoreham no.9 then decided it was time to use his experience by basically falling over every time he got in or near our penalty box. After winning and then blasting his 1st penalty past the unlucky Redders (2-1), he then tried his luck from 25 yards after winning another soft free kick. It was heading for the top corner and looked like it was in until Redders dived high to his right to pull off save of the season so far. The pressure was beginning to mount on the defence by now with the no. 9 having another penalty appeal turned down, so it was with some relief that the ball was fed up to Jakub on the edge of the Shoreham penalty area. Feigning to go inside, he turned outside his marker, took a touch and smashed the ball inside the near post giving the goalie no chance (3-1). Shoreham still hadn't given up though and won another soft penalty which was duly despatched past Redders into the top of the net (3-2). The last few minutes bought no further scares and we held onto to secure a deserved victory.
The prize: a trip to County league side Wick Reserves or last seasons beaten finalists Hanover!
Predators reserves 3 v 0 Barnham reserves
Despite the score line, Tig reports that the reserves played well and dominated large parts of the match. 2 v 0 down early on, we created numerous good chances but just couldn't quite finish them off with a goal.
No game again this week!
Anyone got a new bucket?
6th December League
Barnham 4 v 3 Uni Chi
I think half times 'team talk' showed how much Nigel and the management team cares about the club, lets make sure we don't make him have to break any more buckets!
A well hit RIGHT foot shot from Pedders and a good finish from Brett bought us back to 2 v 2 at half time, after a lacklustre opening half hour could have seen us worse than 2 v 0 down. Great work from Alex on the right wing for both our goals.
The 2nd half started much better, Pedders scoring his second goal after a couple of minutes to put us in the lead for the 1st time. Uni Chi were still pressuring us constantly and equalised 10 minutes later,at this point the game could have swung either way but another good finish by Pedders for his hat-trick put us back into the lead with half an hour to go. The remainder of the match saw the defence and goalie Redders withstand the Uni Chi pressure, one superb save near the end ensuring we took all 3 points.
UB Goalie plays a blinder
20th December League
Upper Beeding 0 v 2 Barnham
To be fair to their goalie, if it wasn't for him Upper Beeding would have been dead and buried long before they were. The 1st half saw JP creating mayhem in the UB defence, and only a combination of crude tackling and good goalkeeping kept the scores level 0 v 0 at half time, one top corner save from a Pedders free kick being the pick of the bunch.
The match finally turned in our favour 6 minutes into the 2nd half when some good play in the penalty area saw the ball fall to Woody for an easy goal. Unfortunately, after the miss of the season the ball fortuitously fell to Pedders who finished it off (1 v 0). For some reason we then sat back and the back 4 , well marshalled by Cogger and BJ, had to weather some sustained UB attacks without creating much ourselves up front. It was almost level when the ball broke to a UB forward in the box, but a superb point blank save from Redders kept the score at 1 v 0.
Finally we started to put pressure on the UB defence, and when JP was upended once again (86 mins), this time in their penalty area, the referee pointed to the spot. JP got up and took the penalty which was well saved by the UB goalie, luckily Boxy was following up and smashed it into the back of the net (2 v 0).
Overall,3 deserved points,a clean sheet and up to 3rd in the league. Bring on the new year!
Good start to the new year for Reserves
3rd Jan Div 2 South
Hunston 1 v 4 Reserves
According to Pete Lawrence it was a great team performance in which Shauno was outstanding. Goals from Shauno, Dave Payne and Daz (plus an own goal) made it a comfortable win, the late Hunston goal being a mere consolation.
Our Cup run goes on
3rd Jan 2009 Centenary Cup
TD Shipley 2 v 3 Barnham
After losing 2 v 0 earlier in the league earlier in the season and not playing well, it was great to go back to TD Shipley and come away with a win.
The pitch was difficult to play on, almost impossible in certain areas that hadn’t thawed out, and the erratic refereeing didn’t help either. We had a great start when Pedders got on the end of a deflected JP shot after only 3 minutes and drilled it past the goalie into the far corner (1 v 0). TD got their first equaliser on 28 minutes when a speculative long shot had Redders scrambling back onto his line. The ball hit the bar and bounced out to a TD forward who slotted it home before the defence could react (1 v 1). The second half also started well, after 49 minutes Sam Enticott seized on a loose ball and slotted it in after great work by JP (2 v 1). TD equalised again on 58 minutes when they were awarded a free kick despite a superb tackle by Trenty, the ball flew into the top corner giving Redders no chance (2 v 2). A tactical reshuffle was called for as we were struggling to mount any sustained attacks, so Aaron and Alex were bought on. This changed the emphasis of the game and the winner came on 80 minutes when a half cleared corner found its way to Aaron on the edge of the box. Despite all of the players in the way he whacked it into the bottom corner (3 v 2).
